Historia

Fundado en 1799 en el extremo sureste costero de Puerto Rico, Maunabo fue creado a partir del territorio de Yabucoa y toma su nombre del vocablo taíno 'Manatuabón.' La economía del municipio se centró en la producción de azúcar en la costa y la agricultura de pequeña escala en el interior; la parroquia del santo patrono San Isidro Labrador conserva registros digitalizados de 1800 a 1935. Con solo cuatro barrios y fronteras terrestres compartidas únicamente con Yabucoa y Patillas, Maunabo ofrece un ámbito de investigación relativamente delimitado; los investigadores que rastrean ancestros anteriores a 1799 de esta área deben consultar los registros de Yabucoa. Maunabo no sirvió como pueblo matriz de ningún municipio posterior.

Escudo de Armas

The shield features a silver field with a green chevron and a green chief bearing a lighthouse. Two gold yokes with silver cords appear in the lower field. The silver and green colors symbolize sugarcane and agricultural wealth. The chevron represents the two mountain ranges that frame the town; the lighthouse refers to the historic coastal structure; and the yokes symbolize agriculture and the patron saint San Isidro Labrador. A mural crown of three towers sits above the shield.
