Arroyo

Founded 1855 Southeast, Puerto Rico

Historical Overview

Arroyo is a coastal municipality in southeastern Puerto Rico, founded in 1855 when it separated from Guayama. It developed as a significant maritime and sugar-exporting port throughout the 19th century, with its economy shaped by the regional hacienda system. For genealogists, records predating 1855 are found in Guayama parish registers and civil records; after 1855, the Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen holds sacramental records, supplemented by civil registration from 1885 onward.
