Luquillo

Founded 1797 East, Puerto Rico

Historical Overview

Luquillo, founded on October 26, 1797, under the direction of Don Cristóbal Guzmán, traces its name either to Cacique Loquillo, a Taíno chief who waged guerrilla resistance against Spanish colonizers in the early 16th century, or to Yukiyú, the benevolent Taíno deity believed to inhabit the peaks of the Sierra de Luquillo. The Sierra de Luquillo holds the distinction of being the first Puerto Rican land sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1493 during his second voyage. Historically centered on tobacco, coffee, and sugar cane cultivation, with estates such as Hacienda San Miguel and La Fortuna defining the local economy, Luquillo was briefly dissolved after the U.S. invasion of 1898 and its territory partitioned between Río Grande and Fajardo, before being reinstated as an independent municipality on July 14, 1914. Known today as La Capital del Sol and La Riviera de Puerto Rico, Luquillo is celebrated for its beaches, the nearby El Yunque rainforest, and its coconut palms, which gave rise to the local nickname Los Come Cocos.
