Guánica
Historical Overview
Guánica is a southern coastal municipality with one of the oldest continuous settlement histories in Puerto Rico: Juan Ponce de León established a settlement called Guaynia there in 1508, though the modern municipality was not formally constituted until March 13, 1914, when it separated from Yauco. Situated along the Caribbean coast and bordered by Sabana Grande to the north, Lajas to the west, and Yauco to the east, Guánica is genealogically significant as both an early settlement site and a young civil unit. Researchers tracing Guánica-area families should begin with Yauco records for lines predating 1914, then move into Guánica's own parish and civil registration from 1885 onward. The primary Catholic parish, San Antonio Abad, has records beginning in 1885, and community-built indexes cover baptisms and marriages through 1944.
