Lajas
Historical Overview
Lajas was founded in 1883 after separating from San Germán, making it one of the more recently established municipalities in the fertile southwestern plains of Puerto Rico. The boundary change is central to genealogical research: Catholic and civil records prior to 1883 were registered in San Germán, and researchers must search both municipalities to trace families across this jurisdictional shift. The Lajas Valley's agricultural character drew families whose descendants spread throughout the western region, and records in neighboring Cabo Rojo, Guánica, and Sabana Grande regularly appear alongside Lajas documentation in genealogical research.
Coat of Arms
The coat of arms features agricultural imagery reflecting the fertile plains of the Lajas Valley, religious symbolism tied to the municipality's Catholic heritage, and geographic references to the region's coastal and inland identity.
Barrios
