Historical Overview

Guayanilla is a southern coastal municipality established on February 27, 1833, under Governor Miguel de la Torre, carved from the earlier territory of Yauco. The town's primary Catholic parish, Inmaculada Concepción, holds registers beginning in 1841, making it one of the more accessible southern municipalities for 19th-century genealogical research. Guayanilla's history includes a period of annexation to Yauco in 1902 and the restoration of independent municipal status in 1905. Its coat of arms reflects the town's early Christian foundation, devotion to the Immaculate Conception, the Guayanilla River, its coastal and port identity, and the historic importance of sugar cultivation.
