Peñuelas

Founded 1793 South, Puerto Rico

Historical Overview

Peñuelas, known as El Valle de los Flamboyanes (The Valley of the Flamboyant Trees), was established in 1793 as an independent municipality after separating from Ponce on the southern coast of Puerto Rico. Its primary Catholic parish, Parroquia San José, holds records beginning in 1845; researchers tracing ancestors before that date should consult the records of Ponce's Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Guadalupe. Civil registration began in 1885, documenting births, marriages, and deaths through 2001. The town is also known as La Capital del Güiro, reflecting its cultural tradition of crafting and playing the güiro, a percussion instrument of Taíno origin.
