Juncos

Founded 1797 East, Puerto Rico

Historical Overview

Juncos, known as the 'City of the Valencian,' was officially established on August 2, 1797, when residents of the Humacao jurisdiction successfully petitioned for municipal independence due to the distance and difficulty of reaching Humacao for religious services. The town takes its name from the reeds (juncos) that grew abundantly along the banks of the Valenciano River. Its history reflects the transition from cattle ranching to sugar production in 18th-century eastern Puerto Rico. Parish records at the Parroquia Inmaculada Concepción date to 1797, with civil registration beginning in 1885.
