Canóvanas

Founded 1909 Metro, Puerto Rico

Historical Overview

Canóvanas is a northeastern municipality with an unusually complex administrative history: it existed as a barrio of Loíza for over 400 years, was consolidated into Río Grande in 1902, and re-established as an independent municipality in 1909. Located in the northeastern corridor and bordered by Loíza, Río Grande, Carolina, Juncos, and Las Piedras, it sits at the intersection of the island's historic Afro-Puerto Rican heritage zone and the modern San Juan metropolitan orbit. Genealogists researching Canóvanas families should trace older lines through Loíza records, check the Río Grande administrative layer for early 1900s materials, and then shift to Canóvanas civil registration from 1885 onward. The primary Catholic parish, Nuestra Señora del Pilar, dates to 1903.
