Las Piedras

Founded 1773 East, Puerto Rico

Historical Overview

Las Piedras, founded in 1773 in the eastern region of Puerto Rico, takes its name from the large boulders scattered throughout the surrounding landscape. The town's patroness is the Immaculate Conception, reflected in the parish name and the coat of arms, which features the Virgin's monogram, stones representing the town's name, and a Taíno sun honoring the area's indigenous heritage. Catholic parish records date to the town's founding, though pre-1876 records are not yet digitized and must be requested directly from the parish; the FamilySearch Puerto Rico Catholic Church Records collection covers later records. Civil registration began in 1885 and is available through FamilySearch.
