Loíza
Historical Overview
Loíza is one of Puerto Rico's oldest municipalities, with Spanish colonial recognition dating to 1719, though Indigenous and African settlement in the region began much earlier. The town is of exceptional importance for Afro-Puerto Rican genealogical research, as it historically had one of the island's largest populations of enslaved Africans, free Black families, and their descendants. Researchers should note the town's complex jurisdictional history: Loíza was temporarily incorporated into Río Grande in 1902, restored in 1905, and in 1970 the barrio of Canóvanas was elevated to a separate municipality. Parish records for the Parroquia del Espíritu Santo y San Patricio survive from 1792, providing baptisms, marriages, and deaths for pre-civil-registration research.
Coat of Arms
