Río Grande

Founded 1840 East, Puerto Rico

Historical Overview

Río Grande is an eastern municipality nestled between El Yunque National Forest and the Atlantic coast, with a landscape ranging from coastal barrios to mountainous interior sectors. Founded in 1840 from the territory of Loíza, the town developed around the parish of Nuestra Señora del Carmen and an agricultural economy shaped by the fertile valleys and rivers of the region, including the Río Grande de Loíza, the island's longest river. For genealogical researchers, records predating municipal separation may appear in Loíza's parish registers; FamilySearch holds digitized Catholic church records beginning in 1840 and civil registration records from 1885 onward.

A waving blue stripe symbolizes the Espíritu Santo River. The upper blue section features an open silver book flanked by five gold coins on each side, commemorating the Pimentel and Castro School, the first institution funded jointly by the municipality and the insular government.
