Villalba

Founded 1917 Central, Puerto Rico

Historical Overview

Villalba was established as an independent municipality on February 12, 1917, carved from territory that had previously belonged to Juana Díaz and, before that, to Ponce. Located in the central interior of Puerto Rico, it borders Juana Díaz to the south, Orocovis to the north, Ponce to the southwest, and Coamo and Santa Isabel to the east. Genealogists researching Villalba families should begin with Juana Díaz and Ponce records for any lines predating 1917, then shift to Villalba's civil registration and parish records. The main Catholic parish, Nuestra Señora del Carmen, has records beginning in 1895 and a community-created index covering baptisms and marriages through 1945.

The shield displays a green field (sinople) with a 19th-century Puerto Rican village and church at the base and a bright star (lucero) above to the right. The church bears a smaller escutcheon charged with the arms of the Carmelite order, reflecting the parish of Nuestra Señora del Carmen. A mural crown of three towers surmounts the shield, and a scroll reading 'Villalba' appears at the base. Source: Wikimedia blazon; official municipal heraldic description not independently verified.
