Ponce

Founded 1692 South, Puerto Rico Municipality of Origin

Historical Overview

Ponce, founded in 1692 and known as La Perla del Sur (Pearl of the South), is Puerto Rico's second-largest city and a genealogical hub for southern families. The Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe has served the municipality since its earliest settlement, with surviving sacramental records dating to 1754, offering over two and a half centuries of documentation for baptisms and marriages. Ponce served as the mother town for Peñuelas (1793), Juana Díaz (1798), and Adjuntas (1815), making it an essential starting point for researchers tracing families across the island's southern interior. Civil registration records begin in 1885, and together with the cathedral's archives, provide a continuous documentary record spanning more than 260 years.

Coat of Arms

Coat of arms of Ponce, Puerto Rico

The shield is divided diagonally: the upper left field is red, symbolizing the fire and valor of the citizens; the lower right field is black, representing the ashes of the legendary fire of 1899 and the enduring determination of the people. A gold lion walking over a bridge occupies the central position, directly referencing the surname of the city's founder, Juan Ponce de León. The shield is surrounded by stalks of sugar cane and branches of coffee, representing the two primary agricultural pillars of the Ponce economy during the 19th century.
