Comerío

Founded 1826 Central, Puerto Rico

Historical Overview

Comerío is a mountainous municipality in central Puerto Rico, founded on June 12, 1826, originally as Sabana del Palmar. The settlement was carved from territory belonging to Bayamón, Cidra, and Barranquitas, and was later renamed Comerío in honor of the Taíno chief associated with the region. The primary Catholic parish of Santo Cristo de la Salud holds records beginning in 1832, making Comerío's church books among the older available parish records in the central mountain region. Researchers working on pre-1826 family lines should also consult records from Bayamón, Cidra, and Barranquitas, as families appear in those neighboring jurisdictions before the municipality's formal establishment.

A tobacco plant references the town's agricultural heritage as a former tobacco-growing center. The crown incorporates a Taíno reference honoring the indigenous chief Comerío, for whom the municipality was renamed.
