Hatillo

Founded 1823 North, Puerto Rico

Historical Overview

Hatillo, situated on Puerto Rico's north coast between Camuy and Arecibo, was founded in 1823 by Agustín Ruiz Miranda, a local rancher who donated the land for the town's church and plaza. The municipality grew an identity rooted in cattle ranching and dairy farming, traditions preserved in its coat of arms through two cows and a custard apple tree. Its patron, Nuestra Señora del Carmen, gave rise to the parish established at founding, though digitized parish records on FamilySearch begin from 1876; earlier records must be requested directly from the local parish. For genealogical research, Hatillo's civil and church records form a continuous research path from the mid-19th century through the Spanish-American War transition period.

The coat of arms features a gold crown with three towers at the top, marking municipal dignity. A custard apple tree (anón) and two cows in the central field reflect Hatillo's agricultural and dairy heritage. Blue-and-silver waves across the base represent the north-coast Atlantic setting. The shield of La Orden del Carmen honors the town's Carmelite patronal devotion, and the motto reads 'Hatillo del Corazón.'
