Jayuya
Historical Overview
Jayuya is a mountain municipality in the central highlands of Puerto Rico, officially incorporated in 1911 when it separated from Utuado via Law No. 34 of the Puerto Rico Legislative Assembly. The parish of Nuestra Señora de la Monserrate was established in 1883, nearly three decades before municipal incorporation, so church records predate civil registration for this area. The municipality takes its name from the Taíno chief Hayuya and is home to Cerro de Punta, the highest peak in Puerto Rico. For genealogists, the relatively late founding means earlier family lines commonly appear in Utuado records, and any ancestor living in this area before 1885 will be found in church records rather than civil registration.
