Adjuntas

Founded 1815 Central, Puerto Rico

Historical Overview

Adjuntas was founded in 1815 on lands carved from Utuado and Coamo, nestled in the central mountain range of Puerto Rico. Its name derives from the Spanish term for 'adjoining lands,' reflecting its origin as a settlement formed at the junction of neighboring territories. The parish of San Joaquín y Santa Ana has served the community since its founding, with records dating to 1815. Adjuntas developed around coffee cultivation and the Mercedita mining district, earning the nickname 'Switzerland of Puerto Rico' for its cool mountain climate; these economic and geographic contexts shape the genealogical record for families from this region.

The coat of arms is divided into two sections. The left side bears a shepherd's staff and yarnwinder representing Saint Joachim and Saint Anne, patrons of the town, while an eight-pointed star honors the Virgin Mary. The right side displays green crosses and bells that reference the town's name — 'adjuntas' meaning adjacent or joined lands — and its deep religious heritage. Together the symbols unite the town's founding patronage and its identity as a mountain community formed at the junction of neighboring territories.
