Toa Baja
Historical Overview
Founded in 1745, Toa Baja is known as the 'Ciudad de los Llanos' (City of the Plains), situated on Puerto Rico's northern coastal plain. Originally part of the fertile Ribera del Toa settled by the Spanish in the early 1500s, it was carved from the jurisdiction of San Juan and later served as the madre pueblo for Dorado (1842). Researchers should check San Juan Cathedral records for 16th and 17th-century families connected to this region, and should search Bayamón collections for records from 1902 to 1905, when Toa Baja was temporarily annexed to Bayamón.
Coat of Arms
The shield features crossed keys representing Saint Peter the Apostle, the patron saint; the letters F and J honoring King Ferdinand and Queen Juana during the early settlement of the Ribera del Toa; a wavy bar symbolizing the Río de la Plata (Toa River), central to the town's development; and three green yuca plants representing Taino indigenous heritage and the region's agricultural tradition.
