Toa Baja

Founded 1745 Metro, Puerto Rico Municipality of Origin

Historical Overview

Founded in 1745, Toa Baja is known as the 'Ciudad de los Llanos' (City of the Plains), situated on Puerto Rico's northern coastal plain. Originally part of the fertile Ribera del Toa settled by the Spanish in the early 1500s, it was carved from the jurisdiction of San Juan and later served as the madre pueblo for Dorado (1842). Researchers should check San Juan Cathedral records for 16th and 17th-century families connected to this region, and should search Bayamón collections for records from 1902 to 1905, when Toa Baja was temporarily annexed to Bayamón.
