Toa Alta

Founded 1751 Metro, Puerto Rico Municipality of Origin

Historical Overview

Founded in 1751, Toa Alta is known as the 'Cuna de los Poetas' (Cradle of Poets). Located in the northern karst region, it was established from territory belonging to San Juan and served as a significant pueblo matriz from which Corozal (1795) and Naranjito (1824) were later carved. For genealogists, the Parroquia San Fernando Rey holds records beginning in 1752, making Toa Alta an essential research hub for families who later settled in the central mountain municipalities. Researchers tracing ancestors in Corozal or Naranjito before 1800 should begin their search in the Toa Alta parish books.
