Vega Alta

Founded 1775 North, Puerto Rico

Historical Overview

Founded in 1775 as 'el Pueblo de los Ñame' (Yam Town), Vega Alta emerged when residents east of the Cibuco River petitioned to separate from Vega Baja to form their own parish and municipality. Located on Puerto Rico's northern coastal plain, the town was central to the region's late 18th-century tobacco and sugar expansion. For genealogists, Vega Alta records are essential for tracing families who moved between the coastal settlements and the karst mountain interior; researchers with ancestors predating 1777 must consult the records of Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Vega Baja.
