Vega Baja

Founded 1776 North, Puerto Rico Municipality of Origin

Historical Overview

Known as the Ciudad del Melao Melao (City of Syrup), Vega Baja is a coastal municipality on Puerto Rico's northern plain that traces its roots to the original Vega de la Ribera del Sibuco settlement; it was formally constituted in 1776 after Vega Alta separated in 1775. The town's history is deeply shaped by sugarcane agriculture, which drove both economic growth and the movement of enslaved workers whose descendants are actively researched today. The primary Catholic parish, Nuestra Señora del Rosario, holds baptismal, marriage, and burial records beginning in 1779, making Vega Baja one of the better-documented municipalities for late colonial genealogy on the north coast. Researchers tracing Afro-Puerto Rican roots should also consult the Registro Central de Esclavos de 1872, available through FamilySearch.
